The Cardiff Wine Tasting Circle

The Committee

Bill
I have been a member of the Cardiff Wine Tasting Circle almost from its beginning. I am currently Minutes Secretary which I have done for three years.

I have successfully completed two different WSET courses at UWIC to improve my knowledge of wines and spirits.

My own personal taste in wines is for the red wines of Spain particularly those of Rioja and La Mancha. My other favourites are the red wines of Uruguay, particularly the Tannat grape.

With the varied tastings that the circle has I can enjoy trying wines from around the world many of which I would not normally taste. Wine tasting makes a great change from my daytime job, mending broken aeroplanes.

Caroline (membership)
I am the Membership Secretary and send out the monthly winetasting letter. I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, lecturing in the School of Hospitality on the WSET courses, amongst other subjects. I am a founder member of CWTC which was set up after several part time students had completed a WSET course and wanted to go on tasting in an informative but fun way - 'no more books or exams please!' The meetings help me to keep my knowledge up to date along with everyone else.

In order to balance my wine consumption I also like to go the the local beer festivals and on alcohol avoidance days take very long walks in the beautiful countryside round here.

Christopher
Life is too short for rubbish wine & indifferent company!

I intend to drink lots more wine before I snuff it & to ensure that the quality of what I drink improves.

My job doesn't pay me a fortune, but thanks to CWTC, I have sampled some rather expensive wines & many grape varieties I have not tried before.

I had feared that the club might prove too " stuffy " for me - but that concern has proved groundless.

CWTC is excellent socially & following the wine tastings I normally eat out with them; at good restaurants & in very good company.

Hywel
Hywel has interests in technology, wine, music and the Eurovision Song Contest. Every year he hosts a party where the first three take up arms against the latter.

Jane
I seriously became interested in wine back in 1989 after doing a wine tour when I realised how little I knew about wine. I then successfully completed two WSET courses at UWIC. The Circle too is a great way to learn about wine, with informed tastings in a pleasant & friendly atmosphere.

Although generally I prefer wines from what I like to call Traditional Areas, I am always willing to try wines from elsewhere, especially as there are some exciting new developments in areas such as China, India etc. I find wine fascinating, how wines can taste differently depending on where, by whom & the year it was made. Each year there is another new vintage to try!

Karen (Treasurer)
Karen passed the Wine and Spirit Education Trust Advanced Exam with Distinction in 2000 and the Diploma in Wine with Merit in 2004. She has since completed the Master of Wine education program and made one brave attempt at the exams.

Ron (chair)
I am a retired Civil Engineer and what my friends call a "Professional Hedonist" in that my wife and I spend an awful lot of time eating-out with the "occasional" glass of wine.

I have no formal qualifications in wine and love the diversity of Loire whites and the old-world reds.

For many years we have toured the wine regions of Europe, mainly France, and enjoyed the wine, food and people.

Since joining the CWTC I have learned much about grape varieties, vintages and wine production throught the world and really appreciate the excellent talks given by professional presenters.

I joined the Circle in 2007 and was elected Chairman in early 2010.
